Kiswa Primary School - Uganda
Despite universal primary education being introduced throughout Ugnada, more than a decade ago, the cost of educating a children has been prohibitive for many families, especially for the poorest people living in Kampala's urban villages. More than 50% of Uganda's population is under 15 years old. In response to this need, more than 200 children are registered at Kiswa Community Nursery & Primary School where they receive a good standard of education following the Ugandan national curriculum.
. In addition to their studies, children also receive two meals a day and help with the cost of uniform and scholastic materials. In order to become fully registered with the government, the school requires major investment in a building of its own with more space than it has on its current school site. Buturi / Mankongoroo Project - Tanzania Buturi is located in the Northern part of Tanzania, not far from Musoma and the Serengeti river. Like many parts of sub-Saharan Africa it has suffered from the disasters of AIDs and drought. Many of the villagers are fishermen and subsistence farmers, typically living in thatched mud huts without electricity or water, which is imperative in the fight against disease. The project is aiming to be developed in three stages, the first is the vision of creating a clean water supply, pre-school nursery and education centre, they project will later develop vocational training schemes and construct small buildings in the area. http://www.buturi-project.co.uk/vision.html The provision of safe water is of paramount importance to the well- being and future sustainable development of this village. Without this, the community cannot move forward in their basic needs for health, education and employment. They are currntly fundraising to build in new school in 2011. Sukhavati Boarding School - Kalimpong, India The Sukhavati Boarding Hostel was built by the local villagers of Zuluk, West Bengal. Most of the adult villagers are illiterate but they have a strong desire to educate their children and better their future prospects.
The project began under the guidance of Penjo Bhutia (Paljor), a Tibetan Monk, in November 2005 and was completed in February 2007. The hostel enables 45 children to receive education without paying accommodation fees. Penjo Bhutia runs another school which allows 115 children from the village to attend and further their education. By this thought, he explains his engagement: "Education of children is the seed of basic development, which builds the leaders of tomorrow."
