Event Name Date Venue

DIY Exhibition
18th September ~ 16th October

Book-Cycle will be opening up it's book storage warehouse for a month long exhibition that aims to create artistic work from redundant matter.

Artists from all over the country will be working under the umbrella of Surface Arts, a newly established collective that aims to utilise empty buildings to host exhibitions. All materials used in this exhibition will be sourced from the site; all artists will work on their own initiatives with limited funds. This gives artists a chance to develop and realise site specific, performance, ephemeral or time based works and much more.

This exhibition aims to question artist led activities within this time of financial instability and asks if this way of creating new independent opportunities is now becoming essential. DIY will be a cross art form exhibition involving multiple disciplines on a huge scale. The work will range from sculpture to performance most involving interactive processes and participation.

This will form the first of the ongoing site specific projects being pursued by Surface Arts.

ARTISTS: Adam Garrett, Chiara Gill, Hanna Downing, James Burgess, Jessica Mautner,
Jo Willoughby, Julie McCalden, Mark Houghton, Megan Hoggins,
Michele Louise Schiocchet and Sarah Farmer.

Book-Cycle Triathlon Fundraiser!

Summer 2010 ~ 26 Mile Triathlon around the Exe Estuary in Devon

One of the residents urban street artists involved with the organising of the 'Bring Your Own Art' exhibitions is aiming to raise funds for Book-Cycle. 'Sandy' will be cycling, swimming and running a route of 26 miles hoping to gain sponsorship and pledges from the general public over the weeks leading up to the event.

The warehouse which Book-Cycle use mainly for storing the thousands of books that have been saved from landfill also doubles as a free art space for many local artists. It has hosted a number of unique exhibitions providing a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their work. The local Council are subjecting Book-Cycle to a substantial business rates bill which, due to the nature in which we generate funds, would stifle our activities on the whole.

If you would like to sponsor him for this event please visit the Online Sponsor Form
Please give as generously as you can and help keep alive an amazing space for all to use!
Thank you for your support

Permaculture Courses

We hope to soon be offering free permaculture courses to all Book-Cycle volunteers and customers, taken on the condition that you teach five others the skills you learn. We believe everyone should understand the basics of permaculture; it is a very helpful stepping stone towards a sustainable, more efficient way of life.

Our friends at West Town farm run permaculture activities every Monday and Thursday from 11am.

Cinema Screenings

We are urgently in need of a venue in Exeter as it is too cold in our yard!!

We host film showings of various independent films, usually followed by a chat about the film content, a Q&A if the makers are present.

We were recently involved in showing “On the Verge”, a documentary made by the Brighton-based peace group, Smash EDO. Smash EDO has been working to shut down the weapons-building factory of arms manufacturer EDO MBM in Brighton for the last two years.

For more information on Smash EDO and their extraordinary work and to download their film, visit www.smashedo.org.uk
