'Miss Julie'
September 2011

the AKZE daggy are proud to present their very first production.

August Strindberg's Miss Julie is an incredibly powerful play portraying social tension and human passion that is evocatively and skilfully wrought by director Zachary W. Magan in this stylish production.

"Societal Structure is inherently polarising. Throughout our lifetime we are plagued by the construction of social strata. You can choose to ignore concepts, su...ch as class and status, but they won’t ignore you. Every now and then we wonder what life would be like at the other end of the line; whether at the top or bottom of the social ladder. We can become burdened by worrying about our standing, our place, especially in relation to other Miss Julie resides at the very top of this ladder but dares to dream of descent into her perception of the freedom of the lower classes. She feels shackled by her status and the expectation therein. Jean, her servant begins at the opposite end. He is a social climber, he dreams of that first step and firmly believes that once he’s taken it he’ll ‘get to the top, like on a ladder.’

They collide somewhere in the middle on Midsummer Night becoming woven together in the passion of the moment, with feelings of love and protection. But this whirling, fleeting meeting destroys all sense of companionship and love. For Miss Julie there is no turning back, she is willing to die rather than stop and face her father and status. Jean is finally exposed to the liabilities and obligations of the gentry. Both long desperately for a return to normality, alas it is now too late.”

DIY Exhibition 2010
18th September ~ 16th October

Book-Cycle will be opening up it's book storage warehouse for a month long exhibition that aims to create artistic work from redundant matter.

Artists from all over the country will be working under the umbrella of Surface Arts, a newly established collective that aims to utilise empty buildings to host exhibitions. All materials used in this exhibition will be sourced from the site; all artists will work on their own initiatives with limited funds. This gives artists a chance to develop and realise site specific, performance, ephemeral or time based works and much more.

This exhibition aims to question artist led activities within this time of financial instability and asks if this way of creating new independent opportunities is now becoming essential. DIY will be a cross art form exhibition involving multiple disciplines on a huge scale. The work will range from sculpture to performance most involving interactive processes and participation.

This will form the first of the ongoing site specific projects being pursued by Surface Arts.

ARTISTS: Adam Garrett, Chiara Gill, Hanna Downing, James Burgess, Jessica Mautner,
Jo Willoughby, Julie McCalden, Mark Houghton, Megan Hoggins,
Michele Louise Schiocchet and Sarah Farmer.

Book-Cycle Triathlon Fundraiser!

Summer 2010 ~ 26 Mile Triathlon around the Exe Estuary in Devon

One of the residents urban street artists involved with the organising of the 'Bring Your Own Art' exhibitions is aiming to raise funds for Book-Cycle. 'Sandy' will be cycling, swimming and running a route of 26 miles hoping to gain sponsorship and pledges from the general public over the weeks leading up to the event.

The warehouse which Book-Cycle use mainly for storing the thousands of books that have been saved from landfill also doubles as a free art space for many local artists. It has hosted a number of unique exhibitions providing a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their work. The local Council are subjecting Book-Cycle to a substantial business rates bill which, due to the nature in which we generate funds, would stifle our activities on the whole.

We are dispatching a 20ft container destined for the region of Ashanti in Northern Ghana in partnership with the volunteers of Thrive Africa. The container will be loaded with educational and recreational books, classroom resources and building materials, which will travel via sea freight to the Port of Tema.

Many of our volunteers are helping to make parcels, choosing which books to box up and send to the libraries in Ashanti . We have collected books from local primary schools in Okehampton,  Ashburton and Departments at Exeter College have also provided useful teaching and higher education resources. Many kind donations have also been pouring in our shop door from the local residents of Exeter -

Book-Cycle's World Book Day Extravaganza!!
Books for Kids and Kids for Books!

Thursday 4th March 2010

For this year's World Book Day, Book-Cycle is inviting local schools, literacy groups and YOU to get involved in the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the U.K. and Ireland. Our project this year involves encouraging young, eager readers to send their favourite book(s) to one of our partner charities. This allows them to come down to our shop and choose 5 free books for themselves to keep.

Thus, hopefully inspiring ever more people to fall into the beautiful world of reading...

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking part in our project for World Book Day. Outlined below are some simple guidelines for the children to follow to package their books.

ALL BOOKS MUST BE MARKED WITH THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE FOR PACKAGE HANDLERS:-

HUMANITARIAN AID FROM U.K. NO COMMERCIAL VALUE. NOT FOR RESALE.
ELIGIBLE FOR NON-STATISTICAL PROCEDURE.

This usually conferes a safe passsage to your parcel. Other destinations need no code.

Books for Ethiopia – (as above)…
(INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS CODE 100.0098. FOR E-YES / ACET SPONSORED CHILDREN.)

PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE ANY BOOKS OF A MAGICAL OR RELIGIOUS NATURE
DUE TO CULTURAL DIFFERENCES.

What you will need:-

 - An Empty Cereal Box
 - Cello Tape / Parcel Tape
 - A4 Blank Sheet of Paper – Cut in Half
 - Felt Tip Pen
 - Your Favourite Book

    Follow These Simple Steps..........

  1. Write a short note or card to go with the book(s). Give it a personal touch, mention something about yourself, you could draw a picture or attach a photo. (Please acknowledge Book-Cycle in the note).

  2. Open out the cereal box, put the book and your note inside and wrap it up like a present. Make sure you stick it well around the edges as it could travel up to 10,000 miles!! Now you can choose which school you'd like to send it to by going to our Partner Charities page.

  3. Write the address of the partner charity you are sending the books to. Underneath write the message for parcel handlers (above in bold). Make sure you write this as clearly as possible.

You are now ready to post the parcel. Head to the nearest post office and request to send the parcel via surface mail or airmail. State that the contents are printed materials.

  4. Write each child's name and their school on the back of their receipt. When you have time, come and choose 2 extra books to take home and keep. (That's five books per world book day champion!)

Happy Reading!!

We will send / give each child a certificate to celebrate the amazing thing they have done by being a World Book Day Champion. Steps 1-3 could be done as part of their Literacy or English class or at home as a fun family orientated activity. Steps 4-5 will need the assistance of a parent or guardian. In order for the children to collect their free books from the shop they have to retain the receipt from posting the book.

From just 58p you can reach the world using Surface mail. Click for Pricing Guide link

Permaculture Courses

We hope to soon be offering free permaculture courses to all Book-Cycle volunteers and customers, taken on the condition that you teach five others the skills you learn. We believe everyone should understand the basics of permaculture; it is a very helpful stepping stone towards a sustainable, more efficient way of life.

Our friends at West Town farm run permaculture activities every Monday and Thursday from 11am.
